Curriculum

Six modules. One coherent system.

Each module builds on the previous. By the end, you have a complete, working personal knowledge management system.

The course is designed to be worked through in sequence. Each module introduces new concepts and asks you to apply them immediately to your own reading and note-taking practice. This is not a passive course. Every lesson has a practical component.

I
Module One

The Attention Economy and Your Attention

This module sets the conceptual foundation. We examine why information overload is not a character flaw but a structural feature of the information environment professionals now inhabit. Understanding this changes how you approach consumption itself.

You will develop a clearer picture of what you actually want to get out of your reading — which is a prerequisite for any useful system.

Lessons include
  • How the attention economy shapes what you read and how
  • The difference between reading for information and reading for understanding
  • Defining your learning goals as a professional
  • A framework for deciding what is worth reading at all
II
Module Two

Capture Systems That Actually Hold

Most capture systems fail because they are designed for comprehensiveness rather than usability. This module teaches a selective capture approach that prioritizes the quality of what you save over the volume.

We work through the mechanics of capturing from different source types, with attention to format, phrasing, and context preservation.

Lessons include
  • The capture decision: what is worth saving and why
  • Capturing from books, articles, and long-form content
  • Capturing from audio: podcasts, lectures, and meetings
  • Capturing your own thoughts and ideas in the moment
  • Writing notes for future-you, not present-you
III
Module Three

Organizing for Retrieval

Organization is where most systems collapse. This module introduces a framework for structuring your notes that is built around retrievability — finding what you need when you need it — rather than tidy categorization for its own sake.

Lessons include
  • Why topic-based filing systems become unusable over time
  • Organizing by project and area of life
  • Tag systems: when they help and when they become noise
  • Links between notes as an organizational tool
  • The inbox as a temporary holding space, not a filing location
Open notebook with hand-drawn knowledge map, arrows connecting ideas, colored markers arranged on wooden surface
IV
Module Four

Synthesis and Pattern Recognition

Collecting notes is not the same as understanding. Synthesis is the process of moving from raw captures to genuine insight — and it requires deliberate practice. This module is the intellectual core of the course.

Lessons include
  • Writing summary notes that force comprehension
  • Identifying when two ideas from different sources are related
  • Building evergreen notes that grow over time
  • The progressive summarization technique
V
Module Five

Review Rituals and Knowledge Maintenance

A knowledge system needs regular maintenance or it becomes an archive you never open. This module introduces review practices at different time scales that keep your system alive, relevant, and useful.

Lessons include
  • The weekly review: what to check and what to process
  • Monthly and quarterly reviews at the project level
  • Pruning: when and how to remove outdated notes
  • Serendipitous review as a creativity tool
  • Keeping the system from becoming a burden
VI
Module Six

Knowledge in Action

The final module focuses on the point of the entire system: using what you know. This means writing, presenting, deciding, and creating. You will work through specific workflows that connect your notes to actual professional output.

Lessons include
  • Using your knowledge base when writing memos, reports, and proposals
  • Preparing for presentations and conversations using your notes
  • Knowledge-informed decision making
  • Sharing knowledge with colleagues without losing your system
